CHAPTER 24

As night fell a cocoon hung heavy from a tree. Steam slowly wafted from it as it bulged grotesquely from the inside, its warmth melting the snow that fell upon it. The Behemoth within struggled to fit, ready to tear through the ripe skin of the womb, like a boil about to burst.

The bulbous, heavy cocoon suddenly ruptured, splashing its gooey contents on the snowy road below it. The snow melted instantly, creating a cloud of mist, and small Infectors scurried in all directions, their instinct driving them to search for a potential host.

The haze dissipated, revealing the young Behemoth shakily standing upright. It stretched for the first time, going from large to massive when it pointed its many legs upward and outward, easily covering a distance of sixty feet. Then it relaxed and withdrew back into itself, getting its bearings on the world it had been born into, the opposite of being inside the cozy safety of the cocoon.

The truck sped up the snowy road, running over Infectors, squashing them easily under the heavy snow tires. Jonah leaned left on the seat. Sometimes his lower back still hurt from his first encounter with a Behemoth. He stomped on the accelerator, and the truck’s powerful engine easily obliged, reaching speeds over 130 kilometers per hour.

The precarious and dangerously slick, icy road dipped before rising up again, allowing the truck to gain even more speed. The stuttering torque of the powerful engine resounded through the night.

Jonah knew better, knew not to allow his emotions to affect his decisions, but he couldn’t help it. No matter how many internal pep talks he gave himself, he just didn’t like himself that much anymore.

“Fuck you!”

The truck rammed into the Behemoth, causing it to screech in pain as it was flung up and then over the vehicle, landing in a heap of tree-length legs. The truck’s air bag deployed. The truck whipped around and spun in a hundred circles before going over an embankment. Deep, fresh snow flew up the windshield as if it had crashed into a lake, and the truck’s momentum halted when it ran into something Jonah couldn’t see under the tidal wave of wet.

It took Jonah a few seconds to remember what had happened. He had a vague memory of a terrible nightmare and realized he’d lost consciousness. He was OK, but the truck definitely wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon. It was deep in a ravine and had nearly toppled over. The truck had crashed into a downed tree that had likely fallen as a result of heavy snow and ice.

Fortunately, the snow wasn’t so deep that Jonah couldn’t see above it, and he was able to roll down the window. He climbed out, bringing along his automatic rifle and machete. He climbed up the embankment on all fours, doing his best over the unsteady powder. His pants, coat, and gloves were all insulated, so he was dry, and also hot from climbing up the embankment so fast.

The impact from the truck had severely hobbled the Behemoth.
